I was a high school quarterback from Kansas with one dream: play college football.
I tested well — a 4.5-second 40. But every time I told a coach, I got the same two words back: prove it. So my parents did what recruiting families do. We spent a small fortune driving and flying to college camps, just for a chance to run in front of someone who'd believe the number.
We made it work — but a lot of families can't make it that far. And even when you can, it shouldn't cost thousands of dollars and a plane ticket just to prove you're fast. For me, the sacrifice paid off: I walked on at Kansas State, earned a scholarship under Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder, spent five years in the Big 12, was voted a team captain as a senior, and earned 2020 Honorable Mention Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year.
After football, I went into energy trading — a career built on numbers that have to be exact, and that everyone has to trust. But I never forgot those camps.
